Kellyanne Conway has implied Kamala Harris’ campaign staff includes “sexists and misogynists” who don’t trust Harris to speak.
The former advisor to Donald Trump was speaking to Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt, who played a clip of Trump criticizing Harris for not doing more media interviews.
In response, Conway remarked, “This is amazing to me. They’re so excited about a woman and the sexists and misogynists in her campaign are not allowing the woman to travel alone or speak on her own extemporaneously to members of the media.”
Conway added, “Have a town hall, don’t be afraid to answer questions, they can make it as friendly as the pep rally that was the Democratic Convention if they want to. But free Kamala already, let her out, let us hear from her.”
Since Harris announced her campaign on July 21 after Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race, she has not held a press conference or sat down for a news interview, a fact that Trump has repeatedly called out.
Harris has instead been touring the nation with her running mate the Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz, covering seven swing states. During the DNC, Harris scheduled a rally in Milwaukee on August 20 and spoke to the crowd of 18,000 people who attended, her largest rally to date, according to USA Today.
The former campaign manager to Trump also said that when Harris is allowed to speak, “that’s when she gets truly frightening,” pointing to some of her economic policies.
Harris’ campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez avoided questions from Fox News Digital at the DNC in Chicago in relation to whether Harris would be doing a press conference.
Harris has since announced that she and Walz will sit down for an interview on Thursday with CNN, following her planned appearance at a rally in Georgia on Wednesday. It will be their first sit-down interview on a news platform ahead of the presidential debate scheduled with ABC News on September 10.
Both Trump and Harris agreed to the debate. Unlike in Trump’s debate against Joe Biden, Harris’ campaign wants both candidates’ mics to be on throughout the debate, which allows them to speak over each other. Trump’s camp has suggested this is because she wants to interrupt him, although he most recently said he doesn’t care either way.
The Harris campaign has been contacted by Newsweek for comment.
